Our Ramadan Social Life

Sometimes i forget that the majority of people here don't even know that it's Ramadan. Even if they do, they don't really have any idea what Ramadan is. If they do know that we're fasting, lots of questions will be asked about when and what we can eat and we get the occasional 'that's so wrong for your body, not even having water bla bla'. Michael's answer to that, which i absolutely love is '2 billion muslims all over the world can't be wrong!'

There's a lot more temptation here that im still getting used to which Im sure is a lot harder for Michael. Besides the many questions, some out of curiosity and some just a teeny bit irritating, we also get friends & family, knowing that we're fasting, showing off food in front of us, perhaps trying to be funny with 'oohs and aaahs this is yummm' comments and practically shoving food in our face. At first i was pretty annoyed, not so much for myself but on behalf of Michael. But then i thought it's not fair for us to expect the same courtesy that we're used to back home. It's so not what they're used to and we're fine with it anyway. It's NOT a big deal. And to be fair, we do get people who's being so apologetic for eating in front of us or forgetting that we're fasting and offering food etc, that we truly appreciate. And there's lots more positives than negatives, so we just gotta be stronger i guess. Dugaan! :p

Back home, it's easy enough not to make social plans during the day. Most social activities will revolve around berbuka puasa and after berbuka. On weekends, we wouldn't be doing much during the day or if we do, none revolving food or requiring too much energy, for me at least. :p

Michael would not accept this mentality of mine. He feels that life should go on as usual even if we're fasting. I know this is how it should be, but me being so used to using fasting as an excuse for not doing things, it's kinda hard. :p But we've been soldiering on, accepting invitations during the day over the weekends.

We had Father's day lunch for Tom 2 weeks ago. That was kinda hard, BBQ chicken filling up the room. But we wouldn't miss it for sure. Especially with Imelda away in the US for 5 weeks visiting relatives. And in the end Tom's happy, so that made us happy. Then last weekend it was a friend's birthday. He cooked Greek & South African food that looked SOOOOO yummm! We stayed quite a while there enjoying his company and his friends. That was a pretty fun day.

Of course, we did have our buka puasa session at Yuz & Kennedy's, together with Lina & Sanjiv. Yuz made nasi lemak complete with fake fried anchovies (soo yumm and crispy!), fake anchovies sambal, prawn sambal, non-beef rendang, mihun goreng, and roasted chicken for mains. That's A LOT of food and all soo good! She also made tea lemon cake with double cream for dessert that i think i ate HALF of the whole cake! Plus a special refreshing mocktail drink of watermelon, ginger ale, mint & buah kabung. SEDAAAAAPNYA! Lina brought tahu sumbat that i sooo miss. And i brought Sara Lee carrot cake.

When at home, Michael's been doing most of the buka puasa preparation. But lately, ive been having food cravings for Malaysian goodies so the other day i made Roti Jala for the first time, after terliur reading a post from Azq's blog! (thanks Azq!) It's probably the ugliest looking roti jala ever (hence, the no pics) but it tasted sooooo goooooood! Michael helped poked 5 holes under a noodle cup for me to menjala and half way thru, the cup kinda terbolos making my last few roti jalas looking like pancakes. But no worries, still pretty good! Then 2 days ago, i wanted so much to eat lontong. It was my first attempt too and i made the nasi impit from scratch! I was so impressed at myself.. hahaahah..Also, the ugliest looking nasi impit ever, but the lontong tasted soo fine, complete with sambal kacang (this one from uncle yeo's satay sauce bottle from Good Luck supermarket lah..hehe). Next project would be Roti John, also another case of terliuq after reading Ibu's glory. ;)

Other than that, things have been fine. Spring is here, we had a few nice days but overall it's still very cold & windy! Michael finally tanam all the plants that were left in the sunroom. The house is still the same as it was after the housewarming. Nothing new has been done and the 2nd bedroom is still full of boxes & bags! Today, we finally got our internet connection at home after 3 weeks. This is something very embarassing for Michael, maklumle before when we're in KL he was complaining so much when we're trying to get Streamyx installed but i didnt think it took 3 weeks. Kalah Streamyx! But of course i didnt rub it in lah...:p

Enjoy the rest of Ramadan guys & do also enjoy the Pasar Ramadan for us..;)

Yan, kalau nak buat nasi himpit kat sana takde jual rice in small packets ke? Kat sini byk jual - the mat saleh masak nasi that way - well their 'instant' way. We just use those for nasi himpit...

Glad to hear you're having a good Ramadhan over there..:)

Yan,

I have lost your email add.
Raya nanti balik ke tak ?
If nak buat roti jala, takde acuan pon takde ..boleh ajer guna jari.
Celop tangan dalam adunan, and boleh kirai guna hujung jari ( that's what I'd normally do ).
